In We Met Our Cousins Antonia and her brother John spent the summer holiday with their cousins in Scotland. In the book the cousins come to London for Christmas and if it isn’t the most exciting Christmas holiday that a houseful of children ever spent, we should like to know how you’d improve on it! It starts when they get up at dawn to fight a duel in the Square gardens and catch the burglar who is stealing State papers from Lord Peveril’s house. And then they spend all their Christmas money on buying a pony out of an old rag-and-bone-man’s cart; they christen her London Pride and manage to keep her for days in the summer house in the Square without anyone knowing. You can imagine the difficulties of carrying sacks of straw and hay about without anyone seeing; the excitement of riding Pride at night between the policeman’s beats. And it all ends up with a glorious and unexpected hunt at Lord Peveril’s country estate when Pride keeps up with the best of them.
