Maidlin, the beautiful half-Italian girl singer who first appears in The New Abbey Girls, is well known to fans of the Abbey books, but in Maidlin Bears the Torch we meet a new character, Benedicta Bennett (Benneyben), who is a schoolgirl of fifteen. It is quite by chance that she falls in with the Abbey girls, but she proves herself to be a true friend, and a real heroine before the story ends. We also meet many other old friends – Daffodil and Abby Gail, and Rhoda Kane, and Rosamund, at whose wedding Benneyben meets the girls from Wood End School for the first time.
