3rd September 2019 sees the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War and in commemoration we shall be publishing a new edition of The Chalet School in Exile.

Without a doubt, this was Elinor’s most important book and it could be argued that it was the most important children’s book about WW2 written at the time. It begins in the Tyrol, at the time of the Anschluss, and sees a group of girls having to flee for their lives, along with Miss Wilson, and Drs Jack and Gottfried. The book finishes in Guernsey with the first term of the started-again Chalet School. In between, there is a chapter, Hey for England!, in which the exiles are in Switzerland, and which is totally cut from the Armada paperback.

GGBP first published The Chalet School in Exile in 2009, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the start of WW2. As in that edition, we are including in this new edition the information given by Ruth Jolly on the Anschluss, as well as Peter Jolly’s helpful maps, together with Carol Allan’s short story, ‘A Fateful Day at the Sonnalpe’ which was also published in 2009. New for this edition is another short story by Carol, ‘Jack’s Secret’, which will bring tears to many people’s eyes.

Every Chalet fan has wished that Elinor had written more about what happened after the flight from the Tyrol. Amy Fletcher is doing just that and her new book, as yet untitled, will be announced in a few months’ time
