"Well, Hetty, my lass, have you seen what the Oxford Mail has to say about Jumbo? The elephant friend of all England's children, it calls him."
Listening to her father, Harriet suddenly remembers the plaards she's seen in the street that very afternoon. Jumb, the elephant at London Zoo, is to be sold - sold to a circus in America! Before she knows what's happening, Harriet finds herself catapulted into a huge campaign - the Jumbo Defence League. There are leaflets to deliver, petitions to be sent to Parliament (perhaps even one to the Queen!). A real sergeant appears to drill her class in the school playground. Soon every British schoolchild will be marching on London Zoo!
Or will they? Crusades can breed feuds, and as good intentions get out of hand there are several surprises in store for Harriet ...
Set in Victorian Oxford, The Elephant War is based on a true incident.
