Kate Malone had never really had to stand on her own feet or face up to responsibility.  As the only daughter of a reasonably successful farmer she led a comfortable and carefree life, waited on by her mother and indulged by her father.  And then, through carelessness, she caused the death of her father's prize ram.  Charles and Nell realised that they must force their daughter to grow up ...

And so, at twenty, Kate found herself the tenant of a ramshackle old farm building, some derelict outbuildings and a piece of ground.  She also found herself the owner of a beautiful shire mare which she saved from the knacker's yard - for Kate's one redeeming feature was her great love of horses.

With the aid of old Joe, who had always loved the January Queen, Kate began to build a new life - an outdoor life filld with animals that she had to train and care for herself.  And as her independence grew, so did the bond between her and the beautiful mare - the January Queen ...
