Richard was only eight when news came that his father had been slain and that he, though so young, was now the Duke of Normandy. He had many loyal friends among his father's supporters, but they were unable to protect him when the King of France, vowing friendship, treacherously carried him away to France. Though often self-willed, the boy Duke had great courage, and this, together with his freindship with the king's gentle and pathetic son Carloman, helped him to endure the hard days of captivity, and carried him through the exciting adventures of his escape and return home.
