The Second World War.  1940.  Tyneside.  There has been an air raid.  A German Heinkel bomber has been shot down.  Somehow, someone has managed to get away with a working machine gun and all its ammunition from the crashed plane.  But who?  And what will they do with the gun, which can blast a hole through a brick wall at a quarter of a mile?  The police, the home guard, the school staff, parents: everyone - and Chas McGill in particular - gets involved in the hunt and in the surprising events that take place that winter.

No other story has more vividly brought to life what it was like to be alive during the blitz, or told such a dramatic tale about a group of young people at that time.
